ENVIRONMENT

AT OCEAN YACHT DECKS WE ARE COMMITTED TO PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND TAKING ACTION FOR A GREENER FUTURE.

OUR WORKSHOP GENERATES ITS OWN ELECTRICITY FROM SOLAR PANELS.

WE STRIVE TO USE SUSTAINABLY GROWN TIMBER AND ECOLOGICAL MATERIALS WHEREVER POSSIBLE, AND ARE FSC CERTIFIED. WE RECYCLE ALL OUR WASTE AND RECONSTITUTE TIMBER OFFCUTS INTO USABLE SHEET MATERIAL.

Timber is a unique building material. A renewable resource that can be replanted and regrown indefinitely, absorbing atmospheric CO2 in the process and sequestering carbon for many years.

Teak has long been the most sought-after wood for yacht decking due to its incredible durability, stability and attractive appearance. However, Asia’s natural teak forests have been and in many areas, continue to be, over exploited, making careful sourcing of timber from only well managed forests essential.

At Ocean Yacht Decks we are aware of our responsibility to ensure that the timber we use comes from responsibly managed forests employing sustainable production methods along with socially equitable practices. Global organisations are necessary to inspect and certify the many links in the timber supply chain and The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a non-profit, multistakeholder organisation, do exactly that. We are an FSC certified company and adhere to FSC principles of sustainable and ethical timber production.

We promote the use of FSC 100% plantation grown teak, which is currently available from Indonesia & Thailand, and we hope other sources will become available in the future.

Plantation grown timber can present size restrictions, as the trees are often felled when younger and smaller. Where larger dimensions are needed we use forest grown teak from India which has a minimal FSC “Controlled wood” status.

Alternatively, we can offer FSC 100% Greenteak™. This is a laminated wood that maximises the yield from plantation grown logs by slicing them into veneers, joining these into longer and larger pieces and reconstituting them into laminated boards. The resulting “engineered wood” is perfectly straight, defect free and perfectly suited to modern design concepts.

natural cork

Natural Cork, has so many advantages as a yacht decking material, it is hard to list them all! The bark is peeled from tree without harming it, and regrows, with a harvest every 10 – 12 years. As the bark regrows, the tree continues to grow and to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, making cork production carbon negative. For each ton of cork harvested some 70 tons of CO2 are absorbed by the growing tree. As a yacht decking it is comfortable under foot, not getting as hot as teak, but is equally durable, resistant to rot and decay. Using cork sheet in very large dimensions, enables complete freedom in design of the yacht deck, without the limitation.

Our workshop, located in Mallorca, Spain where we enjoy sunshine for most of the year, is fitted with solar panels generating more than enough electricity to fully power our workshop.
